The Orthodox Church in America traces its beginnings to Russian Orthodox missionaries who settled in Alaska in 1794. Over the years the Church in America was administered as a diocese, and later an archdiocese, of the Russian Orthodox Church, and was known as the Russian Orthodox Greek Catholic Church of America. Born and educated in Russia, Father Povarnitzin served in Siberia until forced to emigrate to China in 1919.
